Who Was Harry Griffen?
Harry Griffen was born in San Diego, California on January 1 st, 1914.
He obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California and worked as an electrician for General Dynamics during World War II. He also served on La Mesa’s city council from 1953 to 1955 and was elected mayor in 1958 and again in 1962 and 1966. He was instrumental in implementing the town’s first Master Plan and modernizing the city’s sewer system. After his tenure as mayor, he served on La Mesa’s Planning Commission from 1970 to 1980, which led to him being appointed chairman of the City Council from 1980 until he died in 1985.
He is remembered by many as a man who devoted much of his life to planning and updating the city’s infrastructure, but most importantly for his humble nature. He was always seen wearing a polo shirt with khakis during public meetings and other events. His presence is still felt throughout the city of La Mesa, especially in Harry Griffen Park!
